“INSECT BOWL” GOING SOUTH

BRECKSVILLE – The Bees and the Hornets have a long history of facing each other in the preseason’s first scrimmage. From the days of alternating home sites to the last three or four being held at Community Stadium, the one thing you could mark on your calendar with certainty was that Brecksville-Broadview Heights and Medina Highland would scrimmage the second Friday evening of August.

Brecksville joining the Suburban League this season isn’t the only thing that has changed.

Instead of hosting Highland on Friday evening August 14th as originally scheduled, the Bees and Hornets will get after it on Saturday, August 15. Start times, at Highlands new stadium, are; junior varsity and freshmen at 11:00 am, with the varsity scrimmage to follow. That should get underway around 12-noon.

The switch to Highland ties into the Hornets public unveiling of their beautiful new ballpark, which is nestled in a wooded setting to the left front of the high school building. The Hornets are hosting a community open house that day to get folks acquainted with the new stadium. And it made sense to tie-in the annual preseason match-up, dubbed the “Insect Bowl”, between the two squads.

Come check out the new facility and get your football fix.

Notable News

Hudson … Congratulations to Hudson Director of Athletics Ray Ebersole. Mr. Ebersole, the Explorers longtime AD, will be the recipient of a National Distinguished Service Award for his many contributions to high school athletics throughout his career. He will be honored at the Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Associations’ annual event December 15 in Orlando.

Twinsburg … Brian Fantone is the Tigers new athletic director. Fantone replaces Mark Maslona who was named the Bees new AD a month ago.

Padua Franciscan … Word is that the Bruins will sport new helmets this season. If the sneak peak I saw is accurate they are brown with sweet looking orange trim. Perhaps off to history are Padua’s traditional white lids with the brown stripe down the middle and the Purdue style block “P” on the sides. Tom Kohuth where are you now?

Padua, under head coach Tony Shuman, a 1991 graduate of the school, has long been known as a program that volunteers for charitable and worthwhile causes. This summer close to two dozen players, along with coaches, spent a fair amount of time working with the young athletes of the Adapted Football League’s All Star team(s). The league is a function of the Achievement Centers for Children.
