BROADVIEW HEIGHTS – Despite the final result there were plenty of bright spots for the Bees in their 37-28 Suburban League National Division loss to Stow-Munroe Falls Friday night.

Danny Shirilla had an excellent game, completing 18 of 30 passes for 295 yards and two touchdowns. Josh Underwood scored twice on the ground, including an electrifying 76-yard run. And junior linebacker Nick Zakelj intercepted Stow’s Kyle Vantrease on the games first play.

But the performance that really stood out was that of Sam Wiglusz. The sophomore wide receiver set a Brecksville-Broadview Heights single-game receiving yards record against the Bulldogs.

Wiglusz racked up 225 yards on 7 catches. He scored twice on crucial second half plays that covered 36 and 76 yards. His average reception went for 32.1 yards.

Wiglusz broke the single-game record held by Tyler Tarnowski who had 215 receiving yards against Avon Lake in 2012.

“I was just trying to find the openings. Danny put the passes exactly where they needed to be. And that gave me the chance to make some plays. That’s all you can ask for,” Wiglusz said after the game.

Wiglusz’ 36-yard TD early in the third quarter served notice to Stow (9-0, 6-0 SL) that the Bees would not roll over despite trailing 24-7 at the half. His 76-yard reception brought Brecksville (7-2, 4-2 SL) to within a touchdown. And his 69-yard catch and run to the Bulldogs one gave Underwood the opportunity to bring the hosts back to with two points with less than 5:00 to play.

Niall Lewison caught 4 Shirilla passes for 31 yards. Joey McGonegal and Alec Buckley made a pair of grabs.

Underwood reached the end zone twice. The senior running back went for 113 yards on 14 carries. Shirilla called his own number 11 times for a net of 31 rushing yards.

The Bees totaled 441 yards of offense on 56 plays. Stow, on 67 snaps, racked up 498 against a good defensive team. Vantrease was 15 of 30 for 302 yards. He tossed two first half touchdown passes. Both went to Joe Andrassy.

The Bulldogs picked up 15 first downs. The Bees 12. Shirilla punted 6 times for a 37.7 average. Sammy Kraguljac was a perfect 4-for-4 on extra points. Stow’s three field goals, ranging from 32 to 38 yards, were a key factor in the game.

Five Brecksville defenders recorded double-digits in tackles. Michael Rose, a sophomore linebacker, led the way with a bakers dozen. Michael Graham, Lewison (3 solos) and Zakelj had 11. And junior defensive back Steven Klaus added 10.

The Bees made 12 tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Nick Sokolowski blocked yet another Bulldog field goal attempt. Stow also tried a 52-yard FG, which was short.
