THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER

THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM

BRECKSVILLE – There are weekends like this throughout the year, not a whole lot going on. The Bees football team is on a one-week hiatus. The Volleybees are over at Penn State for team camp. Graduation parties are winding down.

What’s a man to do in these Dog Days of Summer?

“You better take it easy. You’re not getting any younger. And you have to go on your annual August to March marathon of covering the Bees starting next weekend. Chill out!”, a friend said yesterday.

But still.

Perhaps these tidbits will tide you over.

Notes from around the area:

Nordonia … The Knights host Dover in week three (September 11th). How is that for an interesting match-up? The Tornadoes rarely make an appearance in this area. Nordy’s first two games will be eye-brow raisers as well. The Knights travel to Mayfield to open the season. Last years game in Macedonia was a classic. A one-point Knight win that set the tone for the 2014 season, which ended with a loss 14 games later in the Division II state title tilt. Returning Division II, Region 3 playoff participant Bedford visits Nordonia in week two (September 4).

Twinsburg … Mike Bell’s Tigers hosted Erie McDowell Friday for a 7-on-7 passing scrimmage. I get the feeling that Twinsburg will be much-improved this season.

North Royalton … Three of the Bears first four games are away from Serpentini Chevrolet Stadium. The lone home game in that stretch is with Highland in week three. NORO scrimmages Padua Franciscan on August 15 and Brush on the 21st.

Wadsworth … The Grizzlies will play three of their first four games at home. They open with Ashland, followed by Wooster, and then travel up the road to Medina in week three. Wadsworth scrimmages with Green at home on August 14. Then they hit to road to Perry on Thursday, August 20th.

Suburban League … Week ten is rivalry week, right? Brecksville-Broadview Heights plays at Hudson on October 30 to close its first season in the SL. The Explorers have topped the Bees the last four years in non-conference games. Meanwhile, North Royalton, the Bees longtime rivals, visit Community Stadium in week seven (October 9) for the annual tussle for The Golden Shoe.

Highland … The Hornets are hosting an open house to allow the public to get acquainted with their new stadium on Saturday, August 15.

Lake Catholic … Former Cougar, Penn State Nittany Lion, and Cleveland Brown Joe Jurevicius spoke to the squad at team camp this past week.

Benedictine … It was great to hear from some old friends after the Bees 7-on-7 scrimmage with the Bengals, Brush and Strongsville last Wednesday.

OHSAA … The Harbin Rankings, the system the Ohio High School Athletic Association uses to calculate computer playoff points, started in 1972. More recently, on July 13, the state association announced that it has adopted a ruling that is already in place in dozens of states which limits full contact in practice by the day and by the week. It is effective this year.

NEXT UP:

The Bees pick-up their equipment Friday morning, July 31. Two-a-days begin August 1st. The Dog Days are winding down.
