BROADVIEW HEIGHTS – Anticipation, they say, is what makes anything worthwhile. The longer you wait, the more pumped up you get about it, the better it is.

The much-anticipated, long looked-forward-to artificial playing surface at Community Stadium had been installed. The final touches were put on it last week, and today it was approved for use.

“The turf is finally good to go. We’ll be using it tomorrow,” said veteran Brecksville-Broadview Heights head coach Jason Black earlier this evening.

The Bee Hive’s new carpet is dazzling. It replaces the original rug, which was installed in the summer of 2007. Community Stadium opened in 1988 with a natural grass playing surface.

7-on-7 Scrimmage

The Bees travel to Benedictine Wednesday evening to face the Bengals, along with Brush and Strongsville. Action begins at 6:00 pm. The teams will rotate against each other until just about sundown. All four junior varsity squads will see their fair share of reps as well.

Openers

Benedictine opens its season with a nationally televised game on ESPNU Saturday, August 29 at 4:00 pm at Gallagher Stadium in Toledo against Central Catholic. Strongsville hosts always tough Avon. Brush makes its way to North Canton to take on Hoover. And Brecksville lifts the lid on its 2015 campaign with a non-league home date against first-time opponent Padua Franciscan. The latter three games are Friday, August 28 at 7:00 pm.

SQUIB KICKS:

Cuyahoga Falls … the Black Tigers, members of the Suburban League, play three of their first four games on the road this season. They have a tough way to go as six of its ten contests are away from home. C-Falls opens at Kent Roosevelt and will begin SL play with a game at the Bee Hive on September 18 (week four). That match-up takes on historical significance as it will be the first-ever Suburban League game for both teams. Ten years from now when someone asks the trivia question of; who did the Bees play in their first-ever SL game, you’ll know the answer.

Medina Highland … In a sign of the times modern technology will be put to good use as Hornets fans will be able to purchase tickets for all home football games on-line. Highland will also cut the ribbon a brand new ballpark next month.

Benedictine … The Bengals had Pat Moriarity (class of 1973) speak to the team recently. Moriarity, who was an outstanding running back for the Bennies when they were members of the old East Senate, is the Vice President of the Baltimore Ravens.

Brush … Jeff Fink is the first-year head coach of the Arcs. Fink was named back in early February. He replaced Josh Wells who took the head coaching job at Rocky River. Fink, a Willoughby South grad, comes to Brush from Mentor where he was the Cardinals offensive coordinator. He was at Mentor for five seasons. Look for the Arcs offense to take on the wide-open passing attack look that made Mentor so effective in recent years.

Austintown Fitch … The Falcons roost will have a new name. According to the Youngstown Vindicators’ website (Vindy.com) Falcon Stadium will now be known as Greenwood Chevrolet Austintown Falcon Stadium. Larry Jaeger, of Cleveland-based Hunter Sports Marketing, put together the naming rights deal. The ten-year package, worth $330,000, runs through June of 2025. It is a little known fact that (trivia alert) Youngstown State University used to play its home games at Falcon Stadium until Stambaugh Stadium was constructed on campus.

Madison … The Blue Streaks won a hot dog eating contest tonight at The Hooley House in Mentor. Over a dozen east side teams, most from the News-Herald’s coverage area, took part in the gastronomical event, which was well-attended.

St. Edward … Adam Mendoza returns as the play-by-play voice of the Eagles again this fall. Mendoza, who also does the broadcasts for Baldwin-Wallace and John Carroll, provides high school football coverage for Fox Sports Ohio during the season. Mendoza, one of the games good guys, has an unparalleled passion for high school football.

Brecksville … The Bees annual Gold Card fundraiser campaign kicks off tomorrow, early in the evening at Community Stadium. The Bees Marching Band, which has always had a huge number of participants, is expected to grow even more this season. A big reason for that is the band has a spring break 2016 trip planned for Disney World in Orlando. Brecksville’s cheerleaders, who have won the last three Southwestern Conference cheer competitions held each November, are back from summer cheer camp and ready to go. They too are expecting tougher sledding in the Suburban League when it comes to the post-season cheer competition. Word is is that the Bees will host this years event. However that is not officially confirmed.
