CATCHING UP WITH THE BEES

THIS AND THAT ABOUT BEEVILLE FOOTBALL

BROADVIEW HEIGHTS – With a break in the NBA playoffs and a rare Friday night at home it is high time to get caught-up with the Bees. An ever-growing stack of football related notes on the desk at the worldwide headquarters of Brecksvillefootball.com needs to be administered.

On Monday night June 1st veteran Brecksville-Broadview Heights head coach Jason Black met with the parents of his players in the high school LGI Room. A myriad of topics were on the agenda and, in typical Coach Black fashion (including the wearing of shortened trousers) they were clipped through, one-by-one, like his offense stockpiling first downs on its way to the end zone.

Forms and fees and the reasons why were communicated. The Bees summer schedule was handed out. And that is just the tip of the iceberg as to what has really gone on behind the scenes since the 2014 season came to an end with a 49-21 first-round defeat at Madison in the Division II state playoffs last November.

BOOST THE BEES:

The Bees Athletic Boosters 25th Annual Golf Classic will take place Friday, August 28th at Briarwood Golf Course in Broadview Heights. Spend the day on the links and watch the Bees take on the Bruins in the evening. Not a bad way to spend the day.

The boosters proudly support all athletic programs in the school system in grades 7-12.

The scramble format golf outing begins at 9:00 am with a shotgun start. A field of 15o golfers is expected and there is plenty of room for you. But please register early as foursomes tend to fill-up quickly. The cost is $110.00 per golfer and it includes a boxed lunch and dinner.

For more information please contact Mike Rose or Mike Harwood. Or visit: www.beesboosters.org/golfouting.

INSIDE THE BEE HIVE:

Congratulations to all 2015 BBHHS graduates. They will receive their sheepskins tomorrow, Saturday, June 6 in a 1:00 pm ceremony that takes place at the State Theater at Playhouse Square in downtown Cleveland.

The 2015 class of football playing Bees were members of a historical group. Team members were vital cogs in the programs first-ever back-to-back playoff appearances. Thanks to all the young men who entered the 2014 campaign as a virtual cast of unknowns but through hard work, sacrifice and dedication earned their way into the hearts of the communities they represented.

Word is that the job of tearing-up and replacing the artificial playing surface at Community Stadium (The Bee Hive) began today. The new carpet, which is said to feature red end zones, is expected to be completed by August 1st.

Brecksville-Broadview Heights will officially become members of the Suburban League on July 1st. Say good-bye to the Berea-Midpark’s and Avon Lakes of the world and say hello to the likes of Stow and Wadsworth.

The Bees won three league championships in their ten year stay in the Southwestern Conference. The latest was in 2013 when Beeville ran the table with a 6-0 mark in the circuit. The 2006 club (7-0) and the 2008 squad (6-1) also brought home the hardware.

Brecksville went 49-19 (.721) in its decade-long run in the SWC. The Bees had a winning record against every team save for Avon Lake and Berea-Midpark. The Shoremen were the juggernauts in the loop before the red and gold entered the fray. A-L and Brecksville each won 5 games in the series. The Bees went a combined 14-2 against Berea and Midpark. After the merger the series saw the Titans and Brecksville splitting a pair of entertaining contests.

The Southwestern Conference was a very good fit for Brecksville. Personally I’ll miss the people, the traditions and the rivalries. But things change and life goes on.

The Suburban League features some very good football stadiums. North Royalton, Nordonia, Twinsburg, Hudson, Stow and Wadsworth are all top notch facilities. There is a unique quaintness to Cuyahoga Falls and the Bee Hive, especially with its new turf, will take a backseat to no one. This old hack is looking forward to strolling the sidelines in some different venues.

It has been a revolving door for college coaches coming in to see Bee players this spring. Tyler Tupa, Nick Sokolowski, Niall Lewison, Josh Underwood and Danny Shirilla are on their radars. Even though Tyler Tupa has verbally committed to Ohio University (on April 13th) schools are staying steadfast on him. Syracuse, Purdue, Illinois and defending national champion Ohio State are just a handful of schools that have been in to see the gifted wide receiver who is projected to play defensive back at the Division I college level. Sokolowski, a hulking 6-4, 250-pound two-way tackle, has also shaken more than his fair share of college coaches hands.

The Bees were fitted for equipment after school on May 27th, and director of football operations Mike Grgat assembled the 5-man sled on the same day. The record boards inside the locker room are in the process of being updated. All of the above are sure signs that football season is right around the corner.

The incoming freshmen have been in the weight room after school, every Tuesday and Thursday, since April in preparation for their first season as high school football players.

QUOTE OF THE DAY:

“Joe-D is a brand. All you have to say is ‘Joe-D’ and everyone knows who you’re talking about.” – a team mom said at the recent parent meeting regarding graduating senior Joe Dimitrijevs.
