BROADVIEW HEIGHTS – Posting a 10-2 overall record and making an appearance in a Division I regional semi-final football game was one thing. Being one of the top academic teams in the state of Ohio is an accomplishment of an entirely different high-level.

The 2013 Brecksville-Broadview Heights football program not only achieved on the gridiron they did so in the classroom as well. Of the top 22 lettermen who qualified their average GPA was over a 4.0. The Bees were one of 40 teams out of the 715 across the state of Ohio to earn this prestigious award.

“This shows the true commitment to academic excellence,” said BBHHS head coach Jason Black upon releasing the information this past weekend. “This also allows us to be successful on the field.”

Brecksville had three players earn individual academic All-Ohio awards as well. They were senior captains; Jay Rose, Nick Shirilla and Eli Sorna. “This is the icing on the cake of a great season. All three of these players have boat loads of awards but this one is a different kind,” Black said. “Only 106 students from over 35,000 students who play football in the state of Ohio earn this award.”

In addition, Jay Rose, a linebacker/running back, was selected to be honored as a National Football Foundation scholar-athlete award recipient. Rose will be recognized at the NFF’s annual banquet, which is Tuesday, March 4th at LaCentre in Westlake.

“This is the fourth year in a row that we have had a player honored by the National Football Foundation,” said Black. “We’ve had Matt Galland (2011), Kyle Graham (2012), Mike Tyler (2013) and now Jay Rose this year.”

Congratulations to these outstanding young men on their academic accomplishments.
