BRECKSVILLE – A year ago this week Mike Tyler was at basketball practice getting ready for the Bees home game with Barberton. Today he is in Palo Alto, California preparing to make the trip south to Pasadena.

Tyler, a 6-5, 219-pound freshman at Stanford University, is red-shirting this season but he will be with the Cardinal when they play Michigan State in the 100th Rose Bowl game.

Stanford earned a berth in “The Grandaddy of Them All” when it defeated Arizona State, 38-14, in the PAC-12 championship game.

Tyler, known as “Glue” when he set the Brecksville-Broadview Heights all-time sack  record at defensive end, is listed as an outside linebacker on Cardinal’ roster.

His primary responsibility this season was on the scout team. Each week he learned the upcoming opponents defense and practiced against Stanford’s first team offense. He learned and emulated the moves and plays of many of the nations top linebackers including Anthony Barr of UCLA and Prince Shembo of Notre Dame.

Last weekend at Stanford’s football banquet Tyler was recognized as “The Most Outstanding Defensive Scout Team Player”. Big Mike is in excellent company in that department. The Indianapolis Colts Andrew Luck earned the same award on offense when he was a freshman at Stanford.

The former Bee (Class of 2013) has impressed Cardinal coaches with his work on the scout team. The looks, the effort and the pass rushing ability that Tyler demonstrated this fall were raved about by the Stanford offensive coaches in an on-line story.
